Board Approves Grant Applications for 2019/2020 Totaling over $1.2 Million
The Manitoba Law Foundation’s Board of Directors met in early December to consider applications received in the most recent granting cycle. The Board had determined at their September 2018 meeting to set aside up to $1.4 million for discretionary granting, including offering an increase of 15% to current recipients of core funding grants. The Board also invited applications from both new and current grantees for Project and Small Grant funding that met the following criteria:
- Innovative and/or collaborative projects that further access to justice;
- Projects and Small Grants that address the following needs:
- legal services for rural and remote areas of Manitoba;
- Services that specifically support Indigenous issues and communities; and
- Supporting delivery of legal supports by intermediaries and advocates.
All grant applications, of course, must also fall within at least one of the Foundation’s mandate areas of legal education, legal research, law reform, legal aid services, and the development and maintenance of law libraries.
Core funding grants were approved, conditional upon fiscal-year end funding availability, in the total amount of $987,600 to the following organizations:
- Community Legal Education Association
- Community Unemployed Help Centre
- E.K. Williams Law Library (University of Manitoba)
- Faculty of Law
- Legal Aid Manitoba’s University Law Clinic
- Legal Help Centre of Winnipeg
- Legal Research Institute (Faculty of Law, University of Manitoba)
- Manitoba Law Reform Commission
- Pro Bono Students Canada (Manitoba Chapter)
- Public Interest Law Centre
- Wiyasiwewin Mikkwahp Native Law Centre (University of Saskatchewan).
Project Grant applications totaling $216,350 and Small Grant applications totaling $37,343 were also approved by the Board of Directors.
The next granting window for Small Grant applications of up to $20,000 is open until March 31, 2019. Click here for details on the Foundation’s Small Grants program.
